Math for the Champions! Are you ready to take your Math skills to the next level? Prepare for competition? This class is for you.

We are looking for:

  • Competitive Students (1st - 8th grade) who ❤️Math
  • Awesome Math 📈Teachers 👋

We are here to show you that MATH = FUN.

We encourage academic excellence in mathematics and prepare students to compete in the Kangaroo Math contest. The contest problems are provocative, require great deal of attention and creative thinking, and cover interesting mathematical concepts. They aim to show the beauty of mathematics and, thus, increase the appreciation of mathematics. We believe many children are not challenged enough in the school system. This is why we offer mathematics enrichment programs accessible to all children. Even challenging mathematics can be taught in an interesting and fun way!

In this class, you will learn how to think. You will learn how to learn. You will learn how to tackle any problem.

Program Highlights

  • MK classes are highly engaging and non-repetitive
  • Tests focus on logical, out of the box critical thinking

  • You will receive a certificate from RUF to recognize your success

  • You will gain real world problem solving skills

  • You will make new friends and have a little bit of fun

Curriculum: Kangaroo Math 1-8 Grade Competition Level.

Meet the Teacher(s)

Ligia Apostoaia

First and Second Grade
Ligia’s charity involvement began at a very young age, helping her family foundation with the distribution of humanitarian aid to the families in need in the area immediately. Today she continues to do what she is most passionate about: doing good.
Laura Bercean

Third and Fourth Grade
Laura lives in Key West with her family, including her 3 children Andrei, Thea, and Nyssa. Laura has been working with SOS Mission, a nonprofit focused on helping homeless people and poor families. She believes all Romanians should work together.
Julia Laine

Fifth and Sixth Grade
Ioana returns to RUF this semester, in her second year of teaching. She lives in Tampa, Florida with her two kids and her husband. She believes teaching should be fun and engaging and she is super proud to be one of the first RUF Math Teachers.
Mihai Lehene

Seventh and Eighth Grade
Mihai has been teaching Mathematics and Computer Science as a volunteer for 7 years. As a teenager in Romania, he grew up loving Mathematics, and his teachers inspired him and changed his life forever. Today, he dedicates his life to educating and inspiring people, especially young kids, to be the best version of themselves, by learning something new every day.
  • Each set of problems that we will be solving is split into 3 categories: easy, medium, difficult. Therefore, everyone will be able to solve at least some of the problems every time. Kangaroo problems are mostly logical, and they do not require any specific method. This being said, we will not repeat what is being taught in class. Our teaching will focus on the ability to solve real-world problems.

  • We will be using the last 25 years of Kangaroo tests, for the 3-4 grade level. Each test is split into 3 categories: easy, medium, difficult (3,4, and 5 point problems). A demo set of what these problems look like can be found here.

  • We do not advise you to register your child in a higher class. You should only do that if you have already been preparing for Kangaroo Math for at least two years, and you know exactly what you are dealing with. Generally, we have to move children 1 (or even 2) years lower, so they can cope with the level of complexity involved. We also test children at the beginning of the year, so we know their level as they join the class. You can always switch to a class higher if you think your child is insufficiently challenged in the first month. This being said, the problems are super fun, and the children will enjoy them tremendously.

  • Yes, you absolutely can. Keep in mind we test your child at the beginning of the year, so you will get a fairly good idea of where he or she stands. At the end of the year, every child should pass through the Kangaroo Math international test, so you will get another assessment of your child's ability. Historically, we have had very good results in our class, several children scoring in the top 20 scores in their state.

  • Yes, we will test all children in grades 3 and up at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year, every child is expected to register and pass the Kangaroo Math international competition, so you will get a result for your child.

  • Some teachers are not in Chicago, so some classes will only be taught online. For the teachers that are in Chicago, we are getting ready to teach in HYBRID mode this year, so anyone will be able to join both in-person and online, via zoom. Obviously, the preferred way to teach the children is in-person. In our experience, we are able to teach the same material more than twice as fast when we work in person.

  • Yes, you will be able to leave the children at the center. There is a conference room you will be able to use if you wish to wait. Otherwise, you can pick them up at the end of the class.
