    RDFN Donors Circle 2022, November 2022, $2,000

Funds Sources: RUF Pledge Your Birthday

    Project Name: Donors Circle

    Community Partner: RDFN (Profile)

    Starting Date: 11/2022

    Matching Funds: $2,000

    Project Status: CLOSED

    Short Description:

On November 17th, the Romanian diaspora from Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, the UK, Spain, and the USA gathered for the second edition of the Romanian Diaspora Funding Network (RDFN) Donors' Circle, an online event where to support 3 organizations that are constantly working for change.

RUF provided $2,000 in matching funds and helped raise over $10,000 for the supported projects.

🔵 Caravana Terapeutica (Tent Therapy project) is Romania's only mobile psychotherapy practice. The team's objective is to promote psychotherapy and change the general perception of the need to see a psychologist. Visitors have the chance to talk freely with specialists, have access to support and information materials about anxiety, depression, etc. and benefit from two free psychotherapy sessions with psychologists from the cities where the Caravan operates.

🔵 The "Școli cu scLipici" project of the New Horizons Foundation aims to support 130 preparatory and first-grade pupils to develop the minimum literacy skills (writing-reading) aimed at their class/age level. It targets children from socio-economically and educationally disadvantaged communities and schools with below-average results in national assessments.

🔵 MamaPan - The bakery with Maia has been providing vocational training in the bakery trade and decent jobs to women in difficult life situations for over 7 years: mothers raising their children alone, Roma mothers, mothers who have had no access to formal education or vocational training, etc. In order to be able to continue its work, the bakery proposes to relocate to a new space, which would optimize its operating costs and also allow for a place where MamaPan can sell its products directly.

RDFN is a philanthropic network of 8 diaspora groups and organizations, including the Brussels Donors Circle. We bring together and support Romanians in the diaspora to contribute, through philanthropy, to change for Romania, providing support and resources to civil society at home. Since 2017, we have raised over 116,000 euros, supported 35 projects, and mobilized hundreds of donors in 12 Diaspora Donor Circles. The first edition of the RDFN Donors' Circle took place in June 2021, with over 100 donors supporting 3 projects in Romania with €14,000.

    Details

The screening is considered the main method for fighting against the disease. Unfortunately, in Romania, there is no national strategy for colorectal cancer prevention and no screening program (like there is for cervical cancer). The money raised will help Caravana cu Medici test approximately 450 asymptomatic people with ages of 45-75. Patients who test positive will be later guided for further investigations at the closest gastroenterology department, where, after a colonoscopy, a potential malign lesion can be confirmed or excluded.

    Details

The hospital center is currently equipped with 7 hemodialysis machines, 3 of which have exceeded the number of hours of hemodialysis they can process. The other 4 are technologically outdated. This wearing of the machines increases the adverse effects of hemodialysis on the patients. Because of these conditions, Daruieste Viata would like to support the children needing this treatment by supplying the center with 2 high-performance machines that will reduce the adverse effects of hemodialysis.

PCR Testing Device for INSMC Bucharest, $60,000+

Oana from Caravana cu Medici told me that when COVID started affecting Romania more heavily, they knew that message of support were about to come from the civil society. In a matter of days, dozens of people reached out, trying to see how they can help and contribute in stopping the spread of covid.

Dr. Vasi Rădulescu's campaign aimed at purchasing a PCR Testing Device for INSMC Bucharest - children hospital. With an initial target of 250.000RON, the campaign surpassed the desired sum with 15.123RON. Having raised this great sum of money, the procedures of purchasing the device started. Initially there were two options, one from the United States and one from Europe. With the help of volunteers that endlessly worked on bringing this device inside the country, INSMC can finally test at a very rapid rate with great precision.

Since the acquisition of the device, INSMC has been able to diagnose not only COVID, but other pathologies as well, being able to treat them efficiently without further complications.

    RUF Proposed Financing: $5,150

    RUF Financed Amount: $5,150 (100%)

    Short Description

The Mobile Unit project aims to provide free medical care and information in disadvantaged rural areas in order to obtain a healthier and more responsible population, dedicated to their own health and to the wellbeing of those surrounding them.

By creating a multidisciplinary team of 40 specialists and residents, we assess the health status of the population through consultations and advanced medical investigations - cardiology, gynaecology and screening for cervical cancer, radiology and imaging services, screening tests for hepatic viruses B and C. The activity takes place during the weekends, in specially arranged venues. Thus we build efficient communication networks between the local general practitioners and large treatment centres for cure and continuous supervision of parents in the rural areas. As a secondary objective, we aim to prepare a database to demonstrate the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases and the urge to modernize the rural healthcare system.

We have accomplished the above in order to develop a project with the highest possible efficiency in terms of resources consumed. Consequently, such actions can be scaled nationwide so that it is a part of the health law in which teams of physicians frequently travel to isolated areas to provide these medical services. Wonderful news came a few days ago when our vision has been fulfilled – the Parliament voted on an amendment called Caravana cu Medici that will legislate our activity.
