Mr. Urdea is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Deep Ocean Partners, an opportunistic credit firm. Previously, Alex served as co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of Upper90 Capital Management, LP. Together with his partners, Alex pioneered founder-friendly, flexible capital solutions to companies operating in nascent and growing industries being created by technology and data. At Upper90, Alex strived to add strategic value to founders by providing strategic operating experience and layering in advice from a diverse group of highly engaged advisors and limited partners, as well as a broad network of intellectually curious business builders. Until last year, Alex also served as a Board Director for Thrasio, the pre-eminent aggregator of Amazon FBA businesses and has served as Board Director and Observer for many Upper90 portfolio companies in the eCommerce, Supply Chain and Fintech space.


Prior to Upper90, Mr. Urdea was a Managing Director at Solus Alternative Asset Management where he served as Director of Risk and Quantitative Strategy since the firm’s inception in July 2007. Mr. Urdea was fully integrated into the investment process in a role that combined his quantitative & technical skillsets to evaluate investment opportunities and express Solus’ macro and volatility views, implementing cross asset-class ideas and mitigating the portfolio’s exposure to unwarranted risks. In addition, he led a group responsible for developing and managing a proprietary platform that integrates portfolio management, trading, risk, research, operations, legal, and investor relations functions.
Before helping to spin off Solus from Stanfield Capital Partners, Mr. Urdea was managing risk for Stanfield’s hedge funds and structured products, developing a proprietary arbitrage model to manage the firm’s synthetic CDOs. Prior to Stanfield, he served as a Quantitative Analyst at Deutsche Bank working with the Credit Derivatives desks since January 2003. He began his finance career as an analyst in High Yield Fixed Income Research with Merrill Lynch in 2001.

In parallel to his professional career, Mr. Urdea served as Chairman of the Board for the CFA Society of New York (CFANY) until 2017, a 10,000-member organization and local society of the CFA Institute, founded by financial luminary Benjamin Graham in 1937. By developing strategic partnerships, championing competency over-regulation and advocating for industry ethics reform & representation in Washington DC, Mr. Urdea resurrected the CFANY as the foremost recognized institution supporting financial analysts.


Mr. Urdea received a BSE in Financial Engineering from Princeton University in 2002 along with a Certificate in Finance and Engineering Management Systems. He was inducted into the Sigma Xi Research Society and served in several leadership roles as an undergraduate. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and a Chartered Market Technician (CMT).
