Dan Nicolae serves as Faculty co-Director of the Data Science Institute and the Committee on Data Science at the University of Chicago and Professor, Departments of Statistics, Human Genetics and Medicine.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Statistics from The University of Chicago in 1999 and has held visiting positions at deCode Genetics in Iceland, University of Oxford and UCLA.

In 2018, Dan Nicolae, in partnership with The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, organized the first Data Science International Summer School in Predeal, Romania, an ongoing yearly project. The goal of the Summer School is to familiarize students with relevant state-of-the-art topics such as machine learning, data analytics and statistics, text processing, data management, and visualization.

Born in Craiova, Romania, he graduated from the local high school „Nicolae Bălcescu”, where he discovered his passion for Mathematics, a science which brought him Olympic glory - he won three national prizes.

He married his wife, researcher Raluca Nicolae, during faculty years. They have two daughters and show great interest in supporting, as donors, educational projects destined to empower young women.
