Lights on Democracy - Supporting Election Transparency in Romania

In the wake of Romania's worrying democratic status, with the country ranking 62nd globally for democracy and facing challenges such as misinformation and political disengagement, Lights on Democracy is launching to advocate for greater transparency and fairness in the upcoming 2025 Romanian Presidential Elections.

Launched by the Romanian Diaspora Funding Network (RDFN), this fundraising initiative is dedicated to supporting three prominent civic organizations: Funky Citizens, Rădăuțiul Civic, and Declic, who are committed to promoting a transparent and accountable electoral process. These organizations will use the funds to organize independent election observers, conduct public awareness campaigns, and fight the spread of fake news.

Why This Matters

Romania is currently ranked the lowest in the European Union when it comes to democratic standards. In 2023, Eurobarometer data indicated that Romanians consider disinformation and lack of political engagement as major threats to democracy. Through this campaign, RDFN aims to provide essential resources for Romanian citizens to make informed decisions and to ensure that the upcoming elections are fair, transparent, and free from manipulation.
