The GlobalRomania Student Scholarship Program (ROScholars) - Empowering Romanian Students in the U.S.

The ROScholars Program by Romanian United Foundation (RUF) is a new annual scholarship initiative designed to support exceptional Romanian students studying in the United States. Many international students face unique financial challenges due to F-1 visa restrictions, making them ineligible for most U.S. scholarships and federal aid. Our mission is to break down these barriers and empower students to thrive academically and professionally.

Objectives

  • Provide Financial Support - Offer annual scholarships to Romanian students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.
  • Promote Educational Equity - Ensure talented students can continue their studies without being held back by financial hardship.
  • Strengthen Cultural Identity - Encourage recipients to remain connected to Romanian heritage and diaspora communities.
  • Build a Support Network - Create a lasting community of Romanian students and alumni supporting each other’s growth.

Program Vision

Our goal is to raise $5,000 annually to fund at least one merit- and need-based scholarship. Recipients will be selected based on GPA, financial need, and cultural engagement, with funds sent directly to their universities.

  • Enrolled in an accredited U.S. undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Minimum GPA 3.5.
  • Demonstrated financial need and limited access to other aid.

Application & Selection

The process includes two rounds:

  1. First Round: Transcript, I-20 copy, financial need explanation, and a short introductory video.
  2. Second Round: Creative or written response on how the applicant will remain connected to Romania or contribute to the Romanian community.

Applications open January 15 and close February 1 for the Spring cycle. Winners are announced by Easter.

Impact

By removing financial barriers, ROScholars enables students to focus on their studies, engage with their communities, and prepare for meaningful careers-all while staying connected to their Romanian roots.

Ioana's Story

My name is Ioana Mic and I am a junior college student at Seton Hall University. I was born and raised in Timisoara, Romania, and a little over two years ago I moved to the United States for my studies. At the time, I had no idea what journey I was embarking on. I ended up meeting so many wonderful people, including other Romanians, I adapted quickly to the school system, and I integrated really well in this new country. I basically created the life I always envisioned for myself. On the other hand, I faced so many challenges as an international student in the U.S. At one point I thought my financial situation would prevent me from continuing my studies. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by people who believed in me and who helped me out. But, I know other Romanian students may not be so lucky to have the support system that I did. This is the reason I started RoScholars, a project in which I want to provide assistance to Romanian students in the U.S., who should not have to interrupt their studies because of their financial situation.

Join us in empowering the next generation of Romanian leaders.
