An Iron Will

Up to a point, April 6 was a day like any other for Dany, a 22-year-old girl who lives in Mediaș: she woke up, got dressed, exercised three times a day - in the morning, at noon, and in the evening - she listened to music, she went to eat, she walked a little outside in the frame that has been helping her to walk for decades. But April 6 meant something more. It was the day she started a fundraising campaign for the Pediatric Clinical Hospital in Sibiu on Facebook - the place that helps her keep in touch with her loved ones. She had long wanted to make a nice gesture for the doctors there. When the pandemic started, Dany discovered Romanian United Fund (RUF, a Romanian American organization) on Facebook, and she saw that many people were raising money for various hospitals in the country through RUF to help with protective equipment.

Romania was about to reach the peak of the pandemic, according to specialists, and it was a period of online effervescence when many NGOs raised money for hospitals that had become exclusive hospitals for COVID 19 patients or even built mobile hospitals in Bucharest.

From the room in the center where she lives, Dany knew that she wanted to join the effort to raise funds for her hospital, the pediatric hospital in Sibiu, which had just become a COVID-19 medical support institution. She has been hospitalized since she was only a few days old, and there, she says happily every time, is her "family". "I was only a baby, I don't even know how many months old. But for a long time, I lived in the hospital." She wrote this message on Facebook, accompanied by emojis with happy hearts and faces: "Hello, dear friends, during this period I want to make a nice gesture for the M. Luther Pediatric Hospital in Sibiu. I'm doing this for all the people who dedicate their love to their jobs and to save the lives of little fighters. You have all my respect and all my support, all of you who work at M. Luther Pediatric Hospital, beautiful people with a big heart ❤️🙏😍😇 Any amount matters no matter how small. Those who cannot donate can help with a contribution. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, dear friends ❤️❤️".

Dany was born in Sibiu, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and was abandoned as a baby. She lived in the pediatric hospital for a long time because she had to go through several surgeries, "from 5 years old to about 7 years old, and then when I went to surgery and recovery." People in the pediatric orthopedics department are like her family, says Dany. The doctors there remained close to her heart because they made her feel like a beloved child. While she was in the hospital, for her birthday, on March 5, they bought her toys, clothes, and sweets. "They were by my side when I was in pain from the operation. They were body and soul for me. And they made me a happy child". She has not seen the doctors for four years because since she became an adult, she can no longer be treated in a children's hospital. But she always keeps in touch with them through Facebook and sends them messages and photos almost every day. They talk on the phone because they are Dany's connection with the notion of family. "They are happy to see me in pictures and hear me."

In April, Dany remembers, she told orthopedist Daniel Constantin that she wanted to make a nice gesture for the hospital. "What do you want to do?" He asked. "A fundraiser", Dany replied, and the doctor told her it was a very nice gesture on her part.

Cerebral palsy prevents Dany from walking alone. Over time she has had several surgeries to help her move with the walking frame. It is a condition that progresses, depending on how much the brain was initially affected, and can, over time, immobilize one in bed. Patients cannot take care of themselves, they frequently need attention, and a simple fall, for example, can endanger their joints, already weakened.

Dany is a relatively happy case, says doctor Constantin, because she works hard to be well. "She has an iron will", says Constantin, "she has managed to do more than other patients". In order to maintain one's muscles and joint mobility, it is important to do recovery exercises daily, and Dany "kept looking for exercises, and did everything in addition to what she had to do at the hospital, is a very motivated person and always looks for the half-full side of the glass". The doctor remembers that even in the hospital when she was younger, she liked to talk to other children, "to be as communicative as possible".

Over two "beautiful and difficult" months, as she calls them, Dany raised 1,853 dollars, money that helped provide the hospital in Sibiu with medical coveralls, masks, and visors. She says of herself that she is "a child who never gives up and who helps those around her when they need help." She did this campaign because people from the Pediatrics Hospital M. are "a wonderful and beautiful family. They did a lot of beautiful things for me and they were by my side every day. Because those wonderful people deserve the best.”.

This summer Dany decided to continue her studies because she is "a child too smart to stay this way". She will take evening classes at "Liceul Tehnologic Automecanica" in Mediaș and hopes that these four years will contribute to her dream to become a doctor.
In a message addressed to the team at M. Luther Pediatric Hospital in Sibiu, Dany wrote: "You are the most special and wonderful people. You are at the side of small patients, you help them to live beyond any suffering they have, you are there body and soul for them. And do everything possible to heal them. You dedicate yourself to the profession with all your love for little fighters. You are the greatest heroes. You are a gift from God to me, I love you and I love you very much. You also love me and care for me”.

Până într-un punct, 6 aprilie a fost o zi ca oricare alta pentru Dany, o fată de 22 de ani, care locuiește în Mediaș: s-a trezit, s-a îmbrăcat, a făcut exerciții fizice de trei ori pe zi - dimineața, la prânz și seara -, a ascultat muzică, a fost la masă, s-a plimbat puțin pe afară în cadrul care o ajută să meargă de zeci de ani. Dar 6 aprilie a însemnat și altceva. A fost ziua în care a dat drumul pe Facebook – locul care o ajută să păstreze legătura cu cei dragi – unei campanii de strângere de fonduri pentru Spitalul Clinic de Pediatrie din Sibiu. De mult voia să facă un gest frumos pentru medicii de acolo. După ce a început pandemia, în martie, a descoperit organizația românilor din Statele Unite ale Americii, Romanian United Fund (RUF) și a văzut pe Facebook că mulți oameni strângeau bani pentru diverse spitale din țară prin RUF ca să ajute cu echipamente de protecție.

România urma să atingă vârful pandemiei, potrivit estimărilor specialiștilor, și era o perioadă de efervescență online când multe ONG-uri strângeau bani pentru spitale care deveniseră spitale exclusive pentru pacienții CO-VID 19 sau chiar construiau spitale mobile în București.

Din camera din centrul în care locuiește, Dany a știut că vrea să se alăture efortului de strâns fonduri pentru spitalul ei, cel de pediatrie din Sibiu, care tocmai devenise și el instituție medicală suport COVID-19. Acolo a fost internată de când avea câteva zile și acolo, spune ea cu bucurie de fiecare dată, este „familia” ei. „Am fost de bebeluș în acest spital, nu știu de la câte luni. Dar, o perioadă destul de lungă am trăit în spital”. Atunci a scris pe Facebook acest mesaj însoțit de emojiuri cu inimi și fețe vesele: „Bună, dragi prieteni, în această perioadă vreau să fac un gest frumos pentru Spitalul de pediatrie M. Luther din Sibiu. Pentru oameni minunați care își dedică toată dragostea meseriei pe care o fac și pentru că salvează viețile micilor luptători. Aveți tot respectul meu și toată susținerea mea, toți care lucrați la spital de pediatrie M. Luther, oameni minunați cu suflet mare ❤️🙏😍😇 Orice sumă contează cât de mică ar fi. Cei care nu pot să doneze pot să ajute cu o distribuire. Vă mulțumesc din tot sufletul, dragi prieteni ❤️❤️”.

Dany s-a născut în Sibiu, cu diagnosticul de paralizie cerebrală și a fost abandonată. A locuit mult timp în spitalul de pediatrie fiindcă a trebuit să treacă prin mai multe intervenții chirurgicale, „de la 5 ani cam până la 7 ani și apoi când am fost la operație, și la recuperări”. Oamenii din secția de Ortopedie pediatrică sunt ca familia ei, spune Dany. Medicii de acolo i-au rămas la suflet fiindcă au făcut-o să se simtă un copil iubit. Cât stătea în spital și de ziua ei, pe 5 martie, îi cumpărau jucării, hăinuțe, dulciuri. „Erau lângă mine când mă durea de la operație. Erau trup și suflet pentru mine. Și mă făceau sa fiu un copil fericit”. Pe medici nu i-a mai văzut de patru ani fiindcă de când a devenit majoră nu se mai poate trata într-un spital de copii. Dar ține mereu legătura cu ei pe Facebook, le trimite mesaje și fotografii aproape în fiecare zi, vorbesc la telefon, fiindcă ei sunt legătura lui Dany cu noțiunea de familie. „Ei se bucură să mă vadă în poze și să mă audă”.

În aprilie, își amintește Dany, i-a spus medicului ortoped Daniel Constantin că vrea să facă un gest frumos pentru spital. „Ce vrei să faci?”, a întrebat-o. „O strângere de fonduri”, i-a răspuns Dany, iar medicul i-a spus că e un gest foarte frumos din partea ei.

Paralizia cerebrală o împiedică pe Dany să meargă singură, de-a lungul timpului a avut mai multe intervenții chirurgicale care să o ajute să se deplaseze cu cadrul. E o afecțiune care progresează, în funcție de cât a fost de afectat inițial creierul, și în timp poate imobiliza la pat. Pacienții nu se pot îngriji singuri, au constant nevoie de atenție, iar o simplă căzătură, spre exemplu, le poate pune în pericol articulațiile, și așa slăbite.

Dany este un caz relativ fericit, spune medicul Constantin, pentru că muncește enorm ca să fie bine. „Are o voință de fier”, spune Constantin, „a reușit să facă mai mult decât alți pacienți”. Ca să-ți mențină musculatura și mobilitatea articulațiilor, e important să facă zilnic exerciții fizice de recuperare, iar Dany „și-a tot căutat exerciții, a tot făcut în plus față de ce făcea la spital, e o persoană foarte motivată și caută mereu partea plină a paharului”. Medicul își amintește că și în spital, când era mai mică, îi plăcea să vorbească cu ceilalți copii, "să fie cât mai comunicativă”.

Dany a strâns în două luni, „frumoase și grele”, cum spune ea, 1.853 de dolari, bani cu ajutorul cărora, la spital din Sibiu au ajuns combinezoane, măști și viziere. Ea spune despre sine că e „un copil care nu renunță niciodată și care ajută pe cei din jur când au nevoie de ajutor”. Campania a făcut-o pentru că cei de la spitalul Pediatrie M. îi sunt „o familie minunată și frumoasă. Ei au făcut foarte multe lucruri minunate pentru mine si au fost alături de mine în fiecare zi. Fiindcă acei oameni minunați merită tot ce e mai bun și mai frumos”.

Vara asta Dany a decis să-și continue studiile fiindcă spune că este „un copil prea deștept ca sa rămân așa”. Se va duce la cursurile de seară ale Liceului Tehnologic Automecanica din Mediaș și speră ca cei patru ani să contribuie la visul din copilărie de a deveni medic.
Intr-un mesaj adresat echipei de la Spitalul Clinic de Pediatrie din Sibiu, Dany a scris asa: „Sunteți cei mai deosebiți și mai minunați oameni. Sunteți alături de mici pacienți îi ajutați sa trăiască peste orice suferință pe care o au, sunteți trup și suflet pentru ei. Și faceți tot ce este posibil să-i faceți bine. Vă dedicați meseriei cu toată dragostea față de mici luptători. Voi sunteți cei mai mari eroi. Voi sunteți un dar de la bunul Dumnezeu pentru mine, vă iubesc și țin foarte mult la voi. Și voi la fel mă iubiți și țineți la mine”.
