Inspired by El Camino, Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail, Via Transilvanica is a 1400 km long-distance trail for walking, cycling, and horse riding. It crisscrosses Romania from Putna to Drobeta Turnu-Severin, passing through 600 communities.

2020 The Making of Via Transilvanica

One of the longest and most beautiful hiking trails in the world, Via Transilvanica is a 1,400 km trail that reveals 2,000 years in the history of Transylvania, crisscrossing the whole country of Romania from North to South, starting from Putna, crossing twice the Carpathian Mountains and ending at Drobeta Turnu-Severin.

The remarkable project to establish this trail was led by Tășuleasa Social, an NGO which has been engaged in educational, social, environmental and cultural activities for over 23 years. The Via Transilvanica is the first long-distance trail in Romania.

If your donation was for one milestone ($1,200 as of May 2022) or greater, you can select your milestone following the steps, to provide the 5 character code (LL DDD) for the milestone you'd like.

1. Access Via Transilvanica's site: https://viatransilvanica.com/traseu.
2. Browse the map to the desired location and search for grey milestones only.
3. Write down the code of the available milestone - ex. HR 016 - each label starts with 2 letters indicating the county, followed by 3 digits.
4. Fill out this form. We'll communicate with our VT contact and they will assign the milestone to you, assuming it is still available.
5. Within a week, you'll receive communication from us about the assignment.

On Via Transilvanica's website, you should be able to view the location of your own milestone, if you donated during the Fundraiser event in Dec 2019 and you selected your milestone through the process that took place in 2020 OR if you donated later and communicated with us about your selection.

Depending on the location, you may already be able to "see" your milestone (if it's already been installed), or you may have to wait. The entire project (1,000 kilometers) was expected to be completed in the second part of 2021, however the trails are still in the process of getting adjusted. 

No, the names are not written on the milestone itself. Names will be listed on the "Donor's Walk", near Piatra Fantanele (Parcul National Calimani), in Bistrita. For each milestone purchased, there will be one large stone in the ground, that will have your names on. It's a very beautiful area, you will love it. Your name will also be listed on the phone application that will be delivered in the course of 2020. You will be able to "see" your milestone, and your name listed next to it on the app. You will also be able to write a little story about yourself, your family, or what inspired you to make a donation.

You can write up to 15 names for anyone stone (one for each milestone) and on the phone app that will be used to travel on Via Transilvanica.
