About the Highlands

The Highlands section of the Via Transilvanica crosses the rolling hills and forested landscapes of Bistrița-Năsăud County, one of the most scenic regions along the trail. Developed with the support of Tășuleasa Social, this area is considered the heartland of the Via Transilvanica project. Hikers pass through traditional villages, open meadows, and quiet forests while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. The Highlands offer a perfect introduction to the spirit of the trail—combining natural beauty, rural culture, and the simple joy of discovering Romania step by step.

About Via Transilvanica

Via Transilvanica is Romania’s first long-distance trail for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. Stretching more than 1,400 kilometers from Putna to Drobeta Turnu-Severin, it passes through over 600 communities, weaving a path across some of the country's most stunning landscapes. Inspired by iconic routes like the El Camino, Pacific Crest Trail, and Appalachian Trail, Via Transilvanica is also the largest outdoor artistic sculpture exhibition in the world, celebrating Romania’s culture, history, and natural beauty.

  • Annually, we walk about 100 kilometers (each summer). This means, on average, about 20 km/day.

To walk the entire Via Transilvanica at this pace, it's a 15 year project.

  • The entire trail has been created and designed with the goal in mind of making sure that almost any person can walk it. Difficulty is medium: the trail should be walkable by teenagers as well as elderly people.

  • We suggest bringing one pair of waterproof hiking boots, one pair of athletic shoes, and some extra pairs of socks. Additionally, it would be wise to pack some blister bandages for potential foot discomfort.
